CHAPTER THIRTEEN

MYRA

They pulled out of the gas station and made their way farther into town. Myra wasn’t sure if this whole closure thing was a great idea. It sounded to her like it might be a great way of opening old wounds and even tearing some fresh ones.

While they drove through the narrow, quiet streets, Myra was dragged into her past by memories. She could remember something horrible that had happened on every street corner and in almost every house.

“Wow,” she whispered, her voice rising in her throat without thought. “I have so many memories of this place.”

Tucker pulled over, looking at the park where she was pointing. It was nothing special, just a small square of manicured grass topped with a set of swings, a merry-go-round, some monkey bars, and a terrifyingly high steel slide.

“Remember those?” Tucker laughed, pointing at the slide. “All the new parks have safe, plastic structures now, but damn, those things blistered your butt and smashed you into the ground at a hundred miles per hour.”

“Yeah,” she said softly. It wasn’t the slide she was remembering.

“What’s wrong?” Tucker asked, frowning.

“I got beaten up here every day,” Myra said. “The first time I can remember, I was five years old. There were three other kids that took off after me and pounded me. They told me to never come back here ever again.”

“Did you?” Tucker asked. She nodded.

“Everyone played here. I didn’t come back every day, but I did come back at least once a week. Usually, I got beaten up.”

“Myra…” Tucker reached out to hold her hand. “I don’t understand why.”

“Neither do I,” she said, looking away.

“What about your parents? Didn’t they do anything?”

“No,” she said firmly. “They didn’t care.”

Tucker looked away, not knowing what to say. Myra took her eyes from the old play equipment and stared down the road instead.

“I really don’t know about this, Tucker,” Myra said. “Haven’t you heard all that crap about being your own closure, that abusers will continue to deny your hurt until the end of time, and the most productive thing you can do is close the door on them and never look back?”

Myra knew her words were coming out in a jumbled rush, but she couldn’t help it. She was nervous. She would rather be facing down a firing squad, depending on her hands and instincts to get out of trouble.

The idea of seeing her mother and father … it made her feel kind of slippery inside, as if she was about to tumble off a cliff and launch into a rocky fall.

Tucker reached over and grabbed her hand, making her jump. He squeezed it reassuringly, smiling at her.

“I’ll tell you what. How about we just say hi, for me? I’ll be with you the whole time. You’ve got me now, so it doesn’t matter what anyone tries to say to you, right?”

She grinned. “Yes, I’ll agree.”

“If they are total assholes, at least you’ll know for sure. We can walk away knowing that. If they apologize, well…”

“I might be more scared of that than anything,” she muttered.
